Biomass and Bioenergy Research Group, a UBC based research group, organized a workshop called Wood Pelletization and Torrefaction Workshop (WPAC AGM) at the Marriott Pinnacle Hotel in Vancouver, BC. The event, WPAC AGM 2013, was held on Nov 18th to Nov 20th, 2013. This workshop conveyed the up-to-date researches and developments on wood pellet related topics. It began with a presentation by Dr. Shahab Sokhansanj discussing surveys of worldwide research activities on fuel pellets. Topics such as the modeling of biomass size reduction, torrefied biomass, pelletability of biomass, logistics modeling of pellet production, stratification of gases in stored pellet, pellet encapsulation, self heating, pelleting of torrefied materials and more were presented by 20 different speakers. This workshop successfully created an opportunity for professionals and experts from industries and research centers to share their knowledge and experience with others. The attendees had a chance to visit the UBC labs, equipment, and facilities all related to biomass and bioenergy areas. Some selected setups and equipment were a large reactor for pellet storage, BTGA for torrefaction of biomass, pelletizer, and size reduction equipment. Also, the visitors toured the Nexterra's gasification facility at UBC. This gasification system utilizes biomass to generate heat and power in a large scale.
