My second year as CSBE/SCGAB President is moving along just as rapidly as the first! There have been two Council meetings (September & November) at which we have continued to discuss items of routine business as well as new initiatives. I am happy to report that our 2018 AGM hosted at the University of Guelph earned a profit of approximately $9000 for our Society. Many thanks to the local members whose efforts yielded both an excellent conference and a nice profit! We are now looking ahead to the 2019 AGM which will be hosted by the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (July 14-17). The Local Organizing Committee has proposed the conference theme of “Biosystems for clean technology and low carbon economy” with abstracts requested in all areas related to biosystems engineering from micro to macro molecules and from machinery to buildings. The 2019 Annual General Meeting of the CSBE will be held in Beautiful Vancouver July 14-17, 2019. The venue for the meeting will be at the University of British Columbia with on campus housing and accommodations. The theme of 2019 CSBE/SCGAB AGM is BIOSYSTEMS FOR CLEAN TECHNOLOGY AND LOW CARBON ECONOMY. Contributions are requested in all areas related to biosystems engineering from micro to macro molecules and from machinery to buildings. Topics on socio-economic issues including low carbon technologies are welcome.

Authors are kindly requested to submit a well written, clear and informative abstract of approximately 250 words in English or French describing their work, objectives and factual results. The authors should also indicate their preference for an oral (15 min: 12 min presentation and 3 min questions) or poster presentation. The scientific committee will take all measures to satisfy each author’s first choice. Authors will be notified of the decision concerning acceptance after March 31 2019.

Dr. Shahab Sokhansanj, P.Eng. received the inaugural Arun S Mujumdar Medal in Drying Science at the 21st International Drying Symposium (IDS 2018) held from September 11 to 14, 2018 in Valencia Spain. The Medal and the accompanying inscription mark Dr. Sokhansanj’s outstanding R&D in drying and a distinguished mentorship of researchers who are contributing to progress in drying technologies. Over 300 from 40 countries participated in the Symposium.
Dr. Arun Mujumdar of McGill University founded the first International Drying Symposia in 1978 in Montreal. The Symposia has held its biennial meeting since then in 14 countries. The Medal for Excellence in Drying Science commemorates a half century of Professor Arun Mujumdar’s un-interrupted contribution to the promotion of science and engineering worldwide.
Israel Dunmade, Associate professor at Mount Royal University, Calgary, AB teaches Management of Residuals, Lifecycle Assessment, and Environmentally Sustainable & Healthy Society courses. His current research is focused on the circular economy, environmental and social lifecycle assessment of agri-industrial materials, and application of sustainable production principles in the biomass conversion to bioenergy, biofuels and value-added commodities.
He will be one of the keynote speakers at the 2nd International Conference on Sustainable Material Processing and Manufacturing at Sun City, Northwest, South Africa, March 7-10, 2019. Israel recently won a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship to work with Professors Esther Akinlabi, University of Johannesburg and Michael Daramola, University of Witwatersrand to develop a lifecycle assessment database for South Africa in Summer 2019.
Dr. Joy Agnew at PAMI and also CSBE’s incoming president, recently accepted the position of Director of Applied Research at Olds College, starting January 2019. She said “It was a tough decision to leave PAMI and Saskatchewan, but I am very excited about my new role and the team I will be working with”.
Her leave will be a big loss for Saskatchewan but a huge gain for Alberta. Regardless, she will continue her commitments on graduate advisory committees at U of S (University of Saskatchewan) as an adjunct professor. Officially, her last day at PAMI is the end of his year (2018).
