Application of a new decision support system for assessing soil salinity management scenarios in rechna doab basin, Pakistan

Description: The limited availability of fresh water resources and lack of funds have resulted in significant challenges for decision makers regarding how to use scarce resources for sustainable agricultural water management. Policies based on integrated stakeholder built models are needed to address these issues at the local scale. A stakeholder built decision support system (DSS) for the Haveli region of Rechna Doab, Pakistan, is developed to capture feedbacks between the system’s physical and socio economic components. The DSS describes the integrated relationship between water availability and demand through modeling the decision making process of exploiting groundwater, surface water storage, canal lining or modern irrigation measures with public and private partnerships. Salinity and water scarcity is used as the main stress indicator. The decision support system is composed of a physical model for simulating soil salinity, water quality, and water table depth and a system dynamics model to model socio economic components e.g. farm income and expenditure, and public and private sector contributions. The physical model is calibrated to replicate soil hydrological conditions in the study area. The integrated model passed structural and behavior validation tests. The model is simulated from 1990-2010 on a seasonal time step. Three scenarios were designed to test the effectiveness of the policy options of conjunctive water use, rainwater harvesting, and groundwater pumping control. The results demonstrate that soil salinity can be effectively managed by reducing conjunctive water use and improving resource distribution between upstream and downstream users.
